Investing in your investment | Unique Colorado Handmade Furniture
Commissioning a piece of custom furniture is an investment, not to be taken lightly. It is an investment of time, energy, emotion and money. For those willing to make the investment the returns can be significant.
Properly executed, bespoke furniture first starts with good communication between client and artisan. Visions need to be made and discussed. Especially with a new relationship, this level of communication takes work. Personalities need to align. Visions need to align. We need to learn how to understand each other.
Often a commissioned piece is part of a larger whole. Maybe there’s a new couch involved with the coffee table. How with they get on? What design decisions need to be made to make sure they’re harmonious. Will they even fit into the space? Or the new desk is part of an office remodel. What features do you want/need in the desk? Is there a better option on the market? How do you even know what options are available?
Since a commissioned piece is unique, there’s pressure to get it perfect the first time. You can’t just exchange it at the store. It requires thought, discussion, more thought, and more discussion. These things take time and energy.
And then there’s the money. Custom furniture is not inexpensive. There is a monetary price to be paid for the benefits and value. Again, this can add pressure.
For those willing to invest, however, the rewards can be more than worth the outlay of resources. You can get what you want. You can understand and be involved in the process. The uniqueness sets you apart.
The proper relationship with your shop will foster your investment. (See our previous post on Where to Start Shopping for Custom Furniture.) The question is not whether you’re willing to pay, but whether you’re willing to invest. The difference is in your rate of return. Are you ready?
