Custom Dining Tables | An Investment To Last Generations

When I was a young boy my parents renovated our 1960s kitchen into a beautiful (?!?!) 1970s kitchen, complete with floral vinyl flooring, wallpaper that would give most people a seizure, and yellow and green everywhere. You had to be there to feel / see it.

A dining table for multiple generations

Underneath the green tablecloth is the maple table my grandfather and I are eating on, c. 1976.

It was a small kitchen with a small eating area in the corner, perfect for a circular table for our family of 4. But tables available were all the wrong sizes, so my folks had a custom circular table built. It was a simple maple butcher block form with a disco chrome pedestal base.

Fast-forward almost 50 years. That table top is on it’s third base, and is preparing to feed another generation as our children go off on their own. A light sanding every decade or two and some new mineral oil every several years have kept the top looking almost pristine. We say that the dings and dents from Legos and such add character as well lend the opportunity for sharing the story / experience.

Heirloom dining table for the next generations

The current generation at the family table. It’s getting ready to host the next generation.

Metaphorically, and literally, the dining table is where families gather to grow. My sister and I grew up at this table. My children have grown up at this table. One of them will take it and raise their children at this table. Lifetime memories have been made and shared here. Many Halloween pumpkins have been sacrificed on its surface.

Whether simple or fancy, large or small, the dining table can be an outward supporter or one that quietly fosters us. It’s your lifestyle and your opportunity to pass on to your future. What is important to you?
