Custom Built Furniture? | The Importance of Feedback
When Custom Built Furniture matters most | Do it right, create connections
In years past as a surgeon, every case performed had an element of reflection. Even if it was a routine, uneventful operation and especially if it was a difficult, complicated, long or otherwise challenging case.
What went well?
What didn’t go well?
What could be done better in the future?
And if there was a complication we often discussed those as a group of surgeons.

Much like surgeons, woodworkers are usually their own harshest critics. We strive for perfection, knowing it’s not achievable.
We obsess over the tiniest irregularities that nobody else will see or notice, simply because our hands have been over the entire piece. We fuss and fret. Anything less is going to be a priority of speed and profit. We don’t want that to be acceptable.
Yet how do we know what fussing is important and what fretting is not?
Professional Results = We should be asking our clients.
The relationship is best continued after the delivery or installation. Whether it’s weeks or months later, is your shop willing to ask for feedback on whether your goals were met? Are you willing to provide that constructive information?
For many custom furniture builders a sizable portion of their work is with repeat clients. It becomes a good partnership for both the craftsman and the client. Both parties achieve benefit. The key to reaching that level of working trust is the willingness to ask, and answer, sometimes difficult questions. Integrity matters to those who care.
Is your shop willing to listen and grow?
Are you willing to engage in that process?
How do you want to interact?
Bottom Line: Quality outcomes will always depend on the people you work with. Spend time designing and being a part of the build process with your custom furniture builder, even after delivery. Details Matter.
